WoW Item Upgrades
Item upgrades, also referred as "upping" are items or enchantments that improve the performance of armor and weapons. These upgrade components add a certain number of points to the level gauge for the item, with the cost scaling with their rarity.
A perfectly rolled version of this armor is highly sought-after in the melee PvP community due to its ability to reduce the amount of damage a weapon can cause.
Type-restricted upgrades
Upgrades are a vital component of the equipment crafting process. They can improve the quality of an item and make it stronger or weaker and even add a bonus effect. They also affect the item's appearance. Certain upgrades are universal, while others have rules specific to weapons and armor. The wrong upgrade could ruin a fantastic weapon, and could even cause it to become unusable.
As a general rule, you can only upgrade an item of equipment to the level of its top-level counterpart. This means that you are able to upgrade helms, body armors, gloves and shields to the level of their highest-level counterparts. Weapons, on the other hand can be upgraded to the level of a sword. However, this doesn't increase the weapon's damage output and can decrease its trade value.

Jewel Tiers are determined by the number of modifiers they possess. Jewels with higher tiers have more modifiers than lower-tier jewels. The primary effect is determined by a jewel's tier, whereas the secondary effect is random. Players can use luck potions in order to increase their chances of receiving better secondary effects.
Jewels can also be added to items with matching sockets similar to other upgrade components. For instance Garnet Pebble (gemstone) and an Adorned Garnet Jewel (jewel) both offer a boost to strength, however the Garnet Pebble will only increase regular hits while the Garnet Jewel also boosts the player's strength. The player will then need to provide the correct currency for that upgrade, and may be asked to provide additional materials should they require it. The requirements for this are determined by the level of the item. Weapons are more stringent when in comparison to armor.
In addition to the necessary upgrade components, a lot of upgrade recipes come with an 'Acceptable Materials' list. This list includes the other components of an upgrade that can be used to upgrade an item. It also contains a flag that indicates whether or not the item has a guarantee of a boost.
